An off-duty Detroit police officer shot an armed suspect Saturday afternoon whom police say tried to rob the officer of his cell phone.

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said the off-duty officer was talking on the phone outside a pharmacy at the 600 block of Carpenter Street when a man approached him and demanded the phone.

The officer refused, and the suspect brandished a handgun. The officer slapped the weapon down and ran into the pharmacy, Woody told the Detroit Free Press.

The suspect attempted to fire shots at the officer through the pharmacy door, but the gun jammed. The officer then retrieved his own weapon and fired one shot through the door that hit the suspect in the face, according to Woody.

The suspect was in serious condition at an area hospital Saturday night, Woody said.
