A Dane County, Wis., man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon after he stabbed two sheriff's deputies sent to his home.

The Dane County deputies were in stable condition at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison on Thursday evening, where they were being treated for non-life-threatening stab wounds, department spokeswoman Elise Schaffer told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Three deputies were sent to a home in the town of Primrose near New Glarus around 12:35 p.m. to investigate a disturbance report. An elderly man and woman had been severely beaten and the attacker lived with them at the rural home on Hanna Road.

"There were two people inside the residence that had been beaten," Schaffer said. "When our deputies went inside the house to investigate further, two of them were attacked by our suspect with a knife."

Another deputy who entered the house shot and killed the man wielding the knife. Wounded were Lt. Brian Hayes and Dep. Roger Finch. Each has more than 20 years of service with the Dane County Sheriff's Department.
