VIDEO: Albuquerque Officer Shoots, Kills Judge's Daughter During Foot Pursuit

An Albuquerque police officer shot and killed a young woman suspected in an auto theft during a foot chase early Monday, the department’s third officer-involved shooting in five weeks.

The woman, Mary Hawkes, 19, was the daughter of recently retired Valencia County Magistrate Danny Hawkes, the Albuquerque Journal reports.

Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden said the woman pointed a gun at the officer before being shot.

“An officer pursued on foot when the suspect stopped, turned and pointed a handgun at close range,” Eden said at a briefing Monday morning.

A man who was reportedly Mary Hawkes’ fiance was arrested late Monday night after police said he pointed a gun at people near Wyoming and Central, the Albuquerque Journal reports.

Mario Romero, 26, told police that he threatened people and officers with a handgun to try to start a deadly force situation so he would be killed by police, according to a criminal complaint.

Too bad. Sorry for your loss, Mr. Hawkes, but glad to say--the officer/s all went home that night, unharmed.

Oathkeeper @ 4/22/2014 6:41 PM

I am not sorry for your loss Judge Hawkes. Your wanna be cop killer offspring will never have another chance to murder a LEO. She got what she deserved. Very glad no officers were hurt.

Tony @ 4/22/2014 7:33 PM

Uncalled for, Oathkeeper. As a 30+ year officer, I too am glad the Officers involved have come home alive, and survived a potentially deadly incident. I also have enough civility and humanity left in me to know when not to take a caddy cheap shot dig at a suffering parent, regardless of the character of their child. You dishonor the organization (if your moniker is of whom I think it is) by your lack of compassion, discernment, and discretion in a public forum. May you never have to face what this Judge is now facing. But, God forbid, if you do - may others show more mercy towards you than you have to this man. If this was a temporary and uncharacteristic err on your part, I apologize for the sharpness of the tone of my response. If it is not, please consider changing your moniker as to not tarnish the reputation and character of an otherwise good intentioned organization.

I wouldn't wish the pain and suffering from the loss of a child on my worst enemy. Oath keeper is a spineless piece of shit to say that. Real peacekeepers/law enforcers rue the thought of killing anyone, even if it is justified.

TheRookie @ 4/23/2014 1:05 AM

It's appropriate under Tennessee vs Garner. That darn poor Albuquerque P.D. they can't get a break for anything. Hang in their Brothers/Sisters in Blue @ A.P.D.

Ordinary Joe @ 4/23/2014 5:38 AM

@Oathkeeper Really?!? Meet me on the forum. My screen name is the same. I just think you are a troll trying to besmirch the good Oath Keeper name. If you were an Oath Keeper you would know that it is spelled with two words, not one. @Tony I have been a LE for about 38 years and a member of OK for almost 5 years. I apologize for @Oathkeeper, if he truly is what he says he is. I agree with your statement 100%.

Tony and Ordinary hit the nail squarely on the head.....thanks for being level headed and mature on your responses to Oathkeeper.....! The father of the deceased woman certainly feels badly about this difficult situation and doesn't need anyone to be so rude and ignorant to state such vile, comments. I'm sure the APD Officer wishes he wasn't involved in the incident also. Good luck to APD in their difficult process with the DOJ.......too...! To all of the "genuine" writers and commenters on this site......thanks for your input and discussions..........

The young woman in this case was a 19-year-old foster child of the Magistrate that had been arrested at least four (4) times in the last year on charges including shoplifting and drinking. And these are only the crimes we know of and with which she was charged. We as LEOs know they were mearly the tip of the iceberg. The woman was undoubtedly involved in a criminal life and it was only a matter of time before she escalated to situations such as those in which she lost her life. It MUST be remembered -- she was the cause of her own destruction. The unfortunate officers involved were merely her last victims.

eodk9trainer @ 4/24/2014 2:45 AM

Oath Keeper has to be a troll as someone else stated. I know of no one in the LE community I've been around since 79 that would say something so blatantly stupid and heartless. The parents will have to live with this forever and no parent should suffer this.

Ima Leprechaun @ 4/26/2014 6:49 AM

I really don't care who the suspect is related to, if she points a gun at me with the intent to kill me I am going to shoot to defend myself. From the level of education I am reading on the bloggers none of them are in Law Enforcement and should up the dosage on whatever mental medication they have been taking because its too low.
