2 Detectives Shot in Phoenix; 1 Suspect Dead

March 03, 2014  |

Update: POLICE Magazine sources say one officer has died. This was just confirmed in a press conference at 5:42 Arizona time. The officer was a 21-year veteran.

Two Phoenix police fugitive-apprehension officers were shot and another man was killed Monday afternoon during a pursuit in Phoenix, authorities say.

Phoenix Police Assistant Chief Sandra Renteria said both detectives were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition following the 3:30 p.m. incident, reports azcentral.com.

Across town, the body of the suspect was lying in a parking lot outside a car title buisness near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road. An official confirmed the man was shot and killed in a confrontation with officers.

According to witness accounts, a collision between a white car and a truck near the intersection was related to the officer-involved shooting. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and remained in the roadway.

As Officers we all know that the job is dangerous. We do it anyway because we love it. That's who we are, but it is so painful when another of us becomes a casualty. My heart is filled with sorrow, knowing the pain that the Officer's families, friends and fellow Officer's will have to deal with. May God bless them all. Rest in Peace Officer, you have done all that you could.

May God watch out for them and their families.

As a former "MOB" Unit Detective I am heart broken for the family of these brother officers and my prayers go out to them and all Phx. PD brothers. F.A.I.D. is a dangerous Unit and they take risks everyday to keep us all safe. Sleep well brother, thank you for your sacrifice. As to the wounded brother officer, hang in there we are all pulling for you. I for one am glad that the suspect is dead, but at a very high price to the Phx. P.D. and the citizens of our city. Mr. Mayor perhaps now you can consider hiring more cops since we are 500 down now and your efforts at cutting costs are on our backs! Yes protection is costly, stop playing politics and do the right thing or more of this will happen.

My heart and prayers go out to the fallen officers and their families and also to all of the Phoenix Department. I pray that you find comfort in this tragic loss. I also pray Chief Danny Garcia is able to help you walk through the grieving process with compassion and fortitude. I too was a member of my departments Fugitive Unit before they disbanded us. I also lost 7 friends in a 12 month period early in my career, one being an ex-girlfriend. It's hard to push through, but with God's strength we do. Stay safe my brothers, you are all in my prayers. God Bless!
