VIDEO: Off-Duty Ill. Sgt. Shoots, Kills Would-Be Robber

An off-duty Cook County (Ill.) Sheriff’s sergeant shot and killed a teenager who tried to rob him Monday night, Chicago police say.

The incident occurred at a Far South Side Chicago gas station, the Chicago Tribune reports. Authorities say a surveillance tape shows that as the sergeant began pumping fuel into his vehicle, three males surrounded him and demanded money. One of the males pointed a handgun at the sergeant.

Reports say the sergeant handed over his wallet, but the male with the gun continued to threaten him at gunpoint. The sergeant then produced his own weapon and shot the gunman, 16, in the head. The other robbers fled.

The names of the sergeant and the teen have not been released.

Sounds like the sergeant used sound judgment and has permanently rehabilitated that criminal.

BadKarma525 @ 2/11/2014 4:01 PM

Good shoot. Thugs picked the wrong guy to rob.

Jpaulette @ 2/11/2014 4:06 PM

Maybe some of these dirtbags will read this story and think twice about robbing people at gunpoint. They targeted the wrong guy that night. Good job Sgt.

Wojo @ 2/11/2014 4:17 PM

Just think how many people this has happened to that they got away with robbing, shooting, brutalizing or worse. If more people were armed and knew how to handle a gun, more dirtbags would get what these guys got. If there not shooting and robbing each other, there going after people they know will not give them any resistance. Except for this deputy.

As you sow......you shall reap.

DPB @ 2/11/2014 4:50 PM

Brazen little ba$tard$! Glad the Sgt. was quick on the draw and shot straight!

Cap'n Steve @ 2/11/2014 6:50 PM

Good job Sarge. My guess is this won't make it to much if any news coverage. The main thing is he took care of business, the way it is supposed to go down. I'm sure the kid with the gun was on the verge of turning his life around....one day too late.

Uncle Mike @ 2/11/2014 6:57 PM

Life's full of tough lessons.
"Here endeth the lesson" for the stupid perp.

Justice is served

bob retired leo @ 2/11/2014 8:42 PM

Sarge looked cool as a cucumber . Another one bites the dust and goes back to ashes to ashes and you know the rest. Good shoot.

Dan B @ 2/12/2014 2:26 AM

God bless this officer!! Thank God Illinois FINALLY joined the rest of the nation in acknowledging the Second-Amendment rights our Forefathers granted us so we can defend ourselves from lawless thugs, just as this would-be victim was able to do! The Concealed Carry law has proven to save many innocent lives in 49 states...Illinois will see the benefits shortly.

Greg @ 2/12/2014 4:47 AM

Good shooting and glad the Sarge is OK....pity he couldn't have gotten all 3 of the "Coulda been sons of Obama".

M @ 2/12/2014 6:56 AM

Sgt taking care of business. Good job!
@ Greg - Ignorant, stupid comments not appreciated here. Not the forum for your racist rants.

Sky @ 2/12/2014 7:19 AM

Thank goodness the Sgt. was armed. It had nothing to do with the race of the better dead than alive thief. Anyone making it into a racial thing is just as bad the present occupier of the White House who turns everything he can into a racial matter. The thief pulled first, the Sgt cooperated and did what he had to do to not become a Stat. Good job.

Jellydot @ 2/12/2014 8:04 AM

@M - I think that Greg was making a point of the Trevon Martin incident where Obama had mentioned "Could have been my son" I don't think he was making it racial, I think he was trying to slam our president for making things racial.
Not sure, but that's how I took it.

tedb @ 2/12/2014 8:14 AM

@Jellydot and @M: That's the same way I read it. M: quit looking for offense and you probably won't find it.

S @ 2/12/2014 9:35 AM

Glad the Sgt. came out alive. Also glad that @M did the right thing. As a minority Police Officer, far too many forums like this one go the way of 'ignorance, stupidity and racist rants.'

Capt. Crunch @ 2/12/2014 11:57 AM

Great job Sarge, you made my day.

Capt. Crunch @ 2/12/2014 11:57 AM

Great job Sarge, you made my day.

kevcop @ 2/12/2014 1:42 PM

Great ending to a possibly bad situation! Good job Sgt. gave up the wallet and played the game but the kid had to push it! Need I remind others that a Off Duty Cook County Officer was shot and killed last month at his kids wedding!! I wonder what the 3 thugs were saying? perhaps racial slurs??? Media won't even look into that its only a robbery when black on white violence, when reversed its racial. Tired of this crap. GREAR JOB

Hiram Sims @ 2/12/2014 2:02 PM

Of course it won't make the news. There's no chance of an angle where it can be reported as "Meanie white man murders poor, innocent, harmless, black teenager."

krisnlc @ 2/13/2014 10:27 AM

Good job of a professional cool as a cumcumber sergeant. Glad it was not Greg their..he is a dummy making stuipid comments.... He would have died in this incident...This Sergeant did what he had to do...hopefully everyone will see that..the dead kid...got what was coming to him..he looked for trouble and he found it one last time. I am happy this sergeants family is not the one mourning ... stay safe sarge...dont listen to idiots like GREG ..he would be dead. his attitude is all wrong for survival yours is what it is...because of this..i will go get my conceal carry now.

willie @ 2/13/2014 3:36 PM

Saving taxpayers $$$$ in trial, public defender and then prison housing, doesn't get any better than that! glad your ok Sgt.

william ramos @ 2/13/2014 9:45 PM

One less mugger, one less welfare recipient, one less criminal breeder, and one less liberal parasite knee grow!

Aubrey Davis @ 2/15/2014 2:20 AM

I stay over there and honestly that little self-entitled moondick got exactly what was deserving. Yes I'm black and I applaud that officer. In your face governor Quinn!!! The second amendment live in Illinois and the city of Chicago!!!!! I wanted to spit on the memorial they made but I have a conscience.

John @ 2/16/2014 11:00 AM

Yeah sure but would they have even tried to ROB him what so ever had he been in uniform which absolutely tells you SCUM THIEVES will target average persons of course not COPS because they know POLICE ARE ARMED and can shoot and kill them..In an ALL CARRY STATE same would hold true and crime rate would go instantly down!
