Verdict in Murder Trial for Ex Calif. Officers May Hinge on Grainy Video

January 13, 2014  |

At the heart of the Kelly Thomas murder case is a grainy black-and-white video that covers, almost in its entirety, the struggle between the homeless man and police officers at a bustling Fullerton bus depot on a summer night in 2011, reports the L.A. Times.

As jurors in Orange County, Calif., now deliberate the fate of the Fullerton PD officers, they must determine what that video actually shows.

Prosecutors say the tape clearly presents a confused and vulnerable Thomas who died because one bully cop picked a fight and another lost control and slammed Thomas in the face repeatedly with his stun gun. In the defense's telling, the video captures a violent and errant street person who gave police the fight of their lives.

Two seasoned defense attorneys with years of experience coming to the aid of officers accused of wrongdoing have asked the jury to put emotions aside and see the confrontation from the officers' perspective.

Serpico @ 1/13/2014 1:50 PM John and Ken have done a lot of about the KT story. But it's good to hear a second opinion just as if the first Doc you visit, is wrong. The media can skew things like the Zimmerman case. Or thugs like Rodney King are made to be hero's. Just like media never showed R. Kings history of violence. Personally I hope the Fullerton PD wasn't aiding and embedding in any illegal acts. The problem is, One Bad Apple can spoil it for the entire force! Look at Drew Peterson in Illinois. Much of the force he worked for was Corrupt to the bone? Where are the Serpico's and the Elliot Ness's of the world when you need them the most? I look hard but I can't find them? The Fed gives handouts and fancy M-Raps. It's Federalization of a local force? Which master do you serve? The We the people or a Dictator?
