The St. Louis Police Department is giving some of the city's most at-risk children free books and encouraging them to read and write, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The books are distributed through "library" boxes in the city's impoverished Dutchtown neighborhood.

Officers will also be handing out gift certificates to local businesses to children who leave book reports inside the box, said Capt. Dan Howard, who oversees the city’s first district.
