A Draper (Utah) Police sergeant radioed for help after being fatally shot while he drove his police cruiser toward an awkwardly parked vehicle early Sunday.

Sgt. Derek Johnson, 32, was met with gunfire as he approached a silver Volvo at 6 a.m. at 132 S. Fort St. in the upscale neighborhood. Sgt. Johnson was shot several times and continued driving his patrol vehicle. Authorities rushed to the scene after receiving an "unintelligabe radio communication" from the officer, who crashed into a tree. The officer was transported to Intermountain Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to a city press release.

The man suspected of shooting Sgt. Johnson apparently also shot a woman and later turned the gun on himself, reports Deseret News. Prior the the shooting, the man and woman were involved in a hit-and-run accident.

Sgt. Johnson leaves behind a wife and 7-year-old son.

For Sgt. Derek Johnson, his family, friends and brothers and sisters of the badge.......

Seasons drift so quickly
Beneath the single sky
A lesson in the making
All things must come to die.

Therein lies the silence
The journey beyond the breath
To flowers in the forest
We've now become in death.

But speak of the glint of the eye
Reflected in Damascus Blade
For those who saw freedom & honor
And in battle their lives they gave.

So take heart men of Valor
Know your deeds will endure the night
Live on as flowers in the forest
Live on, within God's light.

Rest In Peace, Sergeant, others will take the watch from here......

Another preventable on duty death. When will it ever become mandatory for police vehicles to be equipped with bullet proof shielding? I for one am getting sick and tired of this senseless and preventable murders of LEOs.

robert Martines @ 9/3/2013 11:45 PM

Rest easy my brother, I got the street for you. You have earned a break. May god welcome you in and may he post an angel to watch over your son.

Daniel @ 9/4/2013 2:00 AM

Rest in piece my friend. Draper has lost one of it's finest guardians of the street, but has gained a guardian angel from heaven. Your family and fellow officers will be in our prayers as I am sure they are in the prayers of the good people of Draper.

Morning Eagle @ 9/4/2013 2:45 AM

R.I.P. Sergeant. The outpouring of grief and support from the citizens of Draper and surrounding communities has been touching to see.
FYI: His killer and the woman he shot are still hospitalized in critical condition and charges have already been filed against him that puts the death penalty 'on the table' according to the prosecutor.

Renee @ 9/4/2013 3:53 AM

Good to now Morning Eagle, that is POS will not escape justice. R.I.P. Sarge...your brothers and sisters in arms will take it from here. May God cover and protect your Wife and Son.

Chief Roy Bamburg @ 9/4/2013 7:33 AM

Sgt. Your previous deeds will never be able to fill the hole left by your passing, may your family hold on to your pride and honor with which all LEO's have. We are underpaid and overworked but we live and sometimes die protecting our community. Your passing reaffirms our values and desire to attempt to make a difference in our world not only for our citizens but for the children of our future generations.
May the good lord look over your family in your absence, rest in peace with the knowledge that your LEO family will also do their part in providing aid and comfort to the ones you leave behind.
Your brothers and sisters in arms,
Ray City Police Department

Captain W Bonsack @ 9/4/2013 8:43 AM

You are a true hero Sergeant Johnson. You are now with God and will serve as his protector. May God hold your family, friends and co-workers in the palm of his hand and allow you to protect them until you meet again.

In the words of Abraham Lincoln, CHARACTER IS LIKE A TREE AND REPUTATION LIKE A SHADOW. THE SHADOW IS WHAT WE THINK OF IT, THE TREE IS THE REAL THING.

From the Great State of Missouri and the City of Arnold. Rest in peace.

Steven Ross @ 9/4/2013 9:24 AM

"No greater love is this, then to lay down your life for another". Thank you for your sacrifice. Your little girl will grow up knowing that her daddy was a hero. What is happening in this country. So many people are so angry and place no value on life. We are heading into the toilet as a society. Prayers for Sgt. Johnson's family and the Draper Police Department.

Lynn Bowerman @ 9/20/2013 3:30 PM

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Rest in peace - your brothers and sisters at the Lemhi County Sheriff's Office (Salmon, Idaho)
