Ariz. Detention Officer Killed at Home

August 08, 2013  |

A Maricopa County (Ariz.) Sheriff's detention officer has succumbed to wounds suffered when he was shot at his west Phoenix home while getting ready for work.

Officer Jorge Vargas was fatally shot at about 4:30 a.m. near Lower Buckeye Road and 91st Avenue. He was wearing part of a uniform and went out to get his pickup truck started, reports the Arizona Republic.

The Phoenix Police Department is investigating the shooting. The officer worked in the agency's jail food factory unit. The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association offered "our thoughts and prayers" to the family, friends and colleagues of Vargas.
