Canadian officials said Monday they foiled an al Qaeda plot to derail a New York-to-Toronto commuter train with the help of the FBI and Department of Homeland Security.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, of Montreal, and Raed Jaser, 35, from Toronto. They have been charged with conspiracy to carry out a terrorist attack and "conspiring to murder persons unknown for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a terrorist group," reports CBC News.

The two men arrested are not Canadian citizens. The RCMP accused the two men of conspiring to commit an "al-Qaeda supported" attack on the VIA Rail Canada passenger train.

The men were targeting a VIA passenger train heading north to Canada out of New York's Penn Station. Once the train had passed into Canada, the attack was to commence, sources told the New York Daily News.

At no time was there an imminent threat to VIA Rail passengers, employees or the general public, according to a VIA Rail statement.

Great job to the Canucks......Now lets keep up the pressure and not get complacent. Nice to see multi-agency and multinational cooperation!!!!

Tom Ret @ 4/22/2013 5:11 PM

As Mike says, no time to get complacent, as there are no doubt more plots to kill us here at home.

Ima Leprechaun @ 4/22/2013 7:49 PM

No doubt they were bad guys but Al-Qaeda...really. Al-Qaeda must have over one billion members to date.

Capt. Crunch @ 4/22/2013 8:09 PM

Lets stop the plots to kill us or at least make it harder for them to plot against us. We need to pay more attention to the Muslim communities and monitor their actions. There may be some good Muslims out there but they have done nothing to help their fellow Americans combat Al-Qaeda.

Tschako @ 4/22/2013 8:48 PM

I agree with Capt. Crunch. The silence of American Muslims is deafening. It grinds me that the media is still wailing about "what could have possibly motivated" the two Chechens to bomb the marathon.

Bob @ VA @ 4/23/2013 4:59 AM

Agree w/Capt. Crunch. We ignore the source group/breeding ground of these terrorists to our peril.

Ima - Get a clue. Do you read your intelligence bulletins? Do you even understand how Al Qaeda recruits, organizes and operates? Get educated on the threat.

Firecop @ 4/23/2013 5:58 AM

The good news is the Canadian legal system will treat these two idiots as they should be treated. They don't have a lame AG who worries about reading everybody their rights before asking them any questions. Kudos to the RCMP and CSIS.

tedb @ 4/23/2013 8:01 AM

The bad news is Canada doesn't have a death penalty, so the Canucks will be supporting these morons for the rest of their lives while they breed other maggots in prison.
