Feds Have Image of Boston Bombing Suspect

Confusion over the possible arrest of a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing left federal officials scrambling to continue their investigation and contain conflicting media reports on Wednesday.

The Associated Press, Boston Globe, and CNN initially reported a suspect had been taken into custody. CNN backed off its report after the FBI, U.S. Attorney's Office and Boston Police Department denied those reports. However, the network quoted an unnamed Boston PD source as saying, "We got him."

The Associated Press and Boston Globe stood by their stories, even as the agencies released official denials. The Associated Press even reported its source had re-confirmed the arrest.

The Boston PD via its Twitter feed said there has been no arrest as of about 3 p.m. East Coast time. Moments earlier, the FBI's Boston field office released a statement criticizing "inaccurate" media reports.

"Since these stories often have unintended consequences, we ask the media, particularly at this early stage of the investigation, to exercise caution and attempt to verify information through appropriate official channels before reporting," according to the statement.

The FBI had scheduled a briefing for 5 p.m., which was later postponed. Reporters had swarmed to Boston's federal courthouse after media reports that the U.S. Marshals Service was bringing the arrested suspect there. A bomb threat was called in to the courthouse, which was cleared, reports

Authorities told the media outlets that they have clear surveillance video taken at a Lord & Taylor store near the bombing site. Investigators have footage showing a suspect carrying and dropping a black bag near the Boston Marathon finish line.

That is a crying shame so please find that sorry punk!

I'm gonna throw a hunch out there: I think the date is significant, beyond that of the Marathon. 15 April is Tax Return Filing Deadline and I think somebody meant this as a statement regarding taxation.

I think the Fed's should look at the Freemen On The Land and/or Sovereign Citizens movements.

Their ideology is to the effect that the US Court System is an "illegitimate exercise of Maritime Law". The individual who flew a Cessna-type airplane into an I.R.S.-rented office space following his lengthy involvement with a Freemen/Sovereign tax-evasion scheme.

Steve Rothstein @ 4/17/2013 7:06 PM

I don't think tax day had anything to do with it. I think it was a much larger scheme, and part of an overall plan against the US by a foreign group. It would tie in with the ricin attacks and the other bomb in the library going off.

The Pakistani Taliban was very quick to deny association with the attacks, which means they might know who did it. The photos put together on the internet show a suspect that appears middle eastern, in my opinion. And there were reports that the FBI and Boston PD had a suspect under guard in the hospital who was a Saudi national and then they served an arrest warrant on the apartment of some Saudi residents in Boston. The one interviewed on the news evaded the question of if he and his friends knew anything about the bombing and displayed signs of lying when he did it.

But I could be wrong and it could very well be a white male lone wolf or a group rebelling against our government. There is certainly no shortage of possible suspect groups in the US, both left and right wing.

Because when I think taxes and IRS I think the Boston Marathon.......yeah, that's the ticket......

Seriously, this domestic rightwing extremist fantasy is kind of defeated by the type of bomb, standard issue Afghanistan/Pakistan al Qaeda style IED (pressure cookery bombs are popular in mountainous areas because pressure coolers are ubiquitous for cooking at altitude)......and the Target, high profile public event.

Those who think its some antitax group clearly don't have the slightest clue about the goals and motives of such groups.......they view the government, not the public, as the enemy......the government was not targeted......Islamist terrorists, however, view all Americans as fair game......'tax day/patriot day'wasn't the issue, Boston Marathon on hand, loss of life and limb .....a continuation of what happens every day in Iraq and Afghanistan.

S.Thomas @ 4/17/2013 9:07 PM

Those who think its some anti tax group clearly don't have the slightest clue about the goals and motives of such groups, who mostly just want to be left alone, but in some cases could go of the deep end, and do try to attack the government, but never unarmed innocent American Citizens!
Because when I think taxes and IRS, I do not think the Boston Marathon, they view the government, not the public, as the enemy, and clearly the government was not targeted, but instead mass civilian casualties, appears to be the obvious goal. Unless you by into the DHS’s new terrorist list? Which by the way you are probably on, just so you know.

TimFromLA @ 4/17/2013 9:12 PM

Question, so if this turns out to be a hillbilly right-winged-inbred,gun-totting Christian, would you call the person a terrorist or a lone nut? Funny how the witness, an Egyptian who was running away from the explosion, was a suspect, which turned out to be a witness, still one has to ask, is there such thing as a Christian terrorist? No? There are Muslim terrorists.

Maybe it's better NOT to have religion in the first place

TrooperB @ 4/18/2013 3:42 AM

All of you can write down who did it and why but the only way we will know for sure is to ask the person who did it. When he or she is caught we will know the answer. Just remember a terrorist can be from our own country. Questions will not be answered until the coward is found.

Boston @ 4/18/2013 3:49 AM

If we didn't let people in this country who we are at war with this probably would have never happened. Remember Pearl Harbor and how people were treated during that event. I can't wait for the USG passes the Immirgration bill to add 30M immigrants into the country. How many more bombings can we expect then? Our Constitution is slowly being turned into a useless piece of paper with some our politicians. Look what they are trying to do with Gun control. Punish the innocent because all the State Mental Hospitals have been closed down. We now drive-thru mental health.

Nichole @ 4/18/2013 4:04 AM

There was no bomb in the library, it was an electrical fire that just happened to be at the same time. They found no foul play with they electrical fire.

N.Swami Durai Velu @ 4/26/2013 8:48 AM

It is often taking place in India also.Reporters with an eye on scoop report on arrest of suspects without verifying the fact. When investigation is in progress and information extracted from the suspect is under the process of verification, the report of arrest etc., will jeopardise investigation.
