Embattled La. Sheriff Denounces Critics As Racist

Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman has questioned critics of his jail management style, implying to a local media outlet that their criticism is racially motivated.

Gusman told the New Orleans Tribune critics are "looking at something different than just the record" of his management of the jail, reports The Times-Picayune.

Earlier this month, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu called on federal prosecutors to take over management of the city jail and oust Gusman. Landrieu made the comments April 2 during a federal civil rights trial over allegations of poor jail conditions.

Criticism of Gusman intensified after videos went viral on the Internet showing inmates at the Orleans Parish Prison drinking beershooting dice, injecting heroin, and in one case, leaving the jail to hit the strip clubs on Bourbon Street, reports The Times-Picayune.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has also questioned Sheriff Gusman's jail management.

Gusman, who is black, accused Mayor Landrieu, who is white, last week of engaging in "Archie Bunker rhetoric." Bunker is a 70s TV character synonymous with bigotry.

Really? @ 4/16/2013 2:42 PM

I see Gusman is playing the 'race card'. that should not ever be allowed!

Chuck @ 4/16/2013 2:44 PM

Yep, nothing to do with the fact that you run or allow the jail to be ran like some third world jail where the inmates come and go as they please, drink, use drugs, it is all because of your skin color.

Jim VG @ 4/16/2013 3:01 PM

Race card first. I hate it when the criminals do it and it just looks pathetic when played by anyone in law enforcement.

Jack Betz @ 4/16/2013 3:13 PM

Funny how any time someone Criticises a black person it's racist.

Tom Ret @ 4/16/2013 3:19 PM

It is funny how many people who claim they are being criticized for reasons of race are in actuality the real racists who want special privilege because of their skin color.

Billy @ 4/16/2013 3:51 PM

When you have absolutely NOTHING in your hand then it's time to play the race card. I worked for awhile in old Orleans Parish Prison back in the late 1970's; I'm sure it hasn't improved and with poor management is no doubt a dangerous Hell Hole.

Capt. Crunch @ 4/16/2013 6:19 PM

If this is true Gusman, should be fired.

therookie @ 4/16/2013 8:17 PM

Bottom line is he's responsible for this jail and its disgusting criminal operation(s). This guy gives L.E. a BIG Black eye, should be fired, investigated, charged if applicable, convicted, and sentenced. What a shame he is.

naynaybeme @ 4/17/2013 2:49 AM

Funny how ALL the comments seem a bit racist...

mike @ 4/17/2013 5:04 AM

Is the interview taking place in his office? If so, is that his "dress" uniform hanging behind him??

FirstTimePosterLongtimeRe @ 4/17/2013 7:29 AM

The uniform must have been left by one of the strippers his inmates brought over...

Sky @ 4/17/2013 8:03 AM

This has nothing to do with race. It has to do with Criminals running the Criminals who are supposed to be running the Criminals. To any anyone in L.E., or anyone with ETHICS it is apparent that there are very little ETHICS or none in this agency.
