Ala. Chief Apologizes to Civil Rights Leader

U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) said he was moved to tears Saturday after Montgomery (Ala.) Police Chief Kevin Murphy presented the badge off of his uniform along with an apology to Lewis and other Freedom Riders for police officers' failure to act during a 1961 attack.
The presentation came during a program at First Baptist Church, across from police headquarters on Ripley Street. Lewis and other members of Congress were in Montgomery for the 13th Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama.
