A St. Lucie (Fla.) County Sheriff's deputy was fatally shot by a suspect, who exited his vehicle during a traffic stop, the agency has announced.

Sgt. Gary Morales, 35, was shot Thursday morning shortly after making the stop at 9:28 a.m. Deputies had stopped a vehicle just south of Fort Pierce in an unincorporated area. At some point during the traffic stop, the suspect got out of his vehicle and shot Sgt. Morales in his patrol car.

Sgt. Morales was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute where he was pronounced dead.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family," said Sheriff Ken Mascara in a statement. A suspect is in custody and is being questioned.

I am heartfelt sorry about the useless death of this police officer that was out there doing his job trying to make this country a safe place to live and was gunned down by a coward criminal. My deepest respect and sorrow to his family. Police Officer, Suffolk County NY

Mr. Obama...where is your heart felt sympathy for these fallen men and women? All we, (the American people) hear is your so called heart felt sympathy for those who were shot with semi-auto rifles. More police officers die each year with a hand gun than any other type of weapon. What are you doing to combat this issue Mr. Obama? Who is protecting the one's that protect American citizens? Where is the media when one of us goes down for the End Of Watch? Mr. Obama, please step away from the semi-auto rifle issue and start focusing on what really matters to the American people. Help us protect you and we will be able to protect you better. BTW, 84, 999,989 firearm owners didn't kill anyone today. It's the one's that possess guns illegally that kill people! Why punish the entire country for others wrong doings? Rest In Peace my brother and may the Lord comfort your family.
