The North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper who was shot four times by a wanted Vermont suspect during a traffic stop Monday is now listed in stable condition.
Trooper Michael Potts, 42, pulled over a Nissan Altima driven by Mikel Edward Brady, 23, on U.S. Highway 70 near Cheek Road in eastern Durham Monday night. Trooper Potts pulled over Brady for not wearing a seatbelt, reports the News & Observer.
As Potts approached the car, Brady shot the trooper four times at close range, hitting him in the face, right shoulder, and on both hands.
The wounded trooper was able to return to his vehicle and radio the description of the suspect and vehicle to dispatchers. Brady was arrested Tuesday morning.
"We ask that everyone please keep Trooper Potts and his family in your thoughts and prayers," Department of Public Safety Secretary Kieran J. Shanahan in a statement.
