Off-Duty Cop Shoots Ore. Deputy

January 21, 2013  |

A 13-year veteran of the Hillsboro (Ore.) Police Department is accused of attempted aggravated murder after an incident at his Forest Grove residence that left a Washington County Sheriff's deputy injured late Sunday.

Timothy Cannon, 46, is being held on $250,000 bail in the Washington County Jail, according to records. An unidentified Washington County Sheriff's deputy who responded to a disturbance between Cannon and his wife at their home in the 1000 block of Southeast 37th Avenue was hurt. His injuries were described by authorities as non life-threatening.

Cannon's wife and 6-year-old daughter were not hurt. Hillsboro Police say Cannon's wife called police to the residence at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Cannon was off-duty at the time.

There were at least 5 Officers involved in Officer Timothy Cannon's Domestic Disturbance. Officer Cannon has numerous superficial wounds to his head and face. This case will serve as a good Training Scenario once the Investigations and the Disposition of this case is known. Such matters are always sad for the Family,Neighbors and Friends.

TERRY F. ZECH @ 1/22/2013 7:22 AM

It shows that we all are human beings. Choice is the word. The officer did not utilize the right choice.

JM @ 1/22/2013 7:40 AM

Sad. Yet I'm not sure how, as a cop, you turn your weapon on another cop... Yes were all human, but definitely a bad choice.

ppd @ 1/22/2013 2:11 PM

Cops are accountable to act in a higher standard then the public. I have no idea what really happened, but cops don't beat cops, and cops sure as hell don't shoot a fellow officer. All the facts are not out yet, and we don't know the story or any officers who were there. Why in the hell would he put fellow officers in the position were they had to react. why did he not set down and let the responding officers to conduct the investigation. Why in the hell did he let this fight continue when he knows what happens. Did he and the deputy have issues before this? If a so called cop shoots another cop for no unlawful reason is wrong. Real cops don't shoot cops, and real cops don't let it get to this point.

I thought gun owners were law abiding citizen. I hope they idiot cop gets fired and prison time. Cops are not above the law and are held to a higher standard.

PPD @ 1/22/2013 3:11 PM

Go Niners, cops are no better then anyone else, we are human and make mistakes. But until we get the "Complete Report" we can't really judge, but the officer should have not let his fight with his wife get to this point. None of this should have happened, the deputy and officer may have had problems in the past for some reason. We need the facts!!! Cops are not idiots, you sound like you have no clue what it takes person and stress being a cop has on a person. If the cop did wrong then that's on him, but if the deputy did wrong that's on him. Cops are held to a higher standard that we place on our self's!

caplock @ 1/22/2013 4:07 PM

Go easy ppd. Your right go ninners sounds like he somehow just ran across this conversation. He has never been in the shoes, and if he has they don't fit him. All of the pro's here agree wait till whole story is in. Then let us "his peers" make our decision.

Randy Lopez @ 1/22/2013 9:48 PM

Maybe he just felt above the law and had gotten away with hurting his wife before, so he felt like he should be able to get away with it again.

DEADMAN @ 1/23/2013 2:31 PM

Not knowing the whole story,it could have gone sideways for a lot of different reasons, the wife over-reacting to the situation, both the husband and wife not seeking outside help, the officer/husband realizing everything going south, the deputy not responding with any empathy towards the situation,(walk a mile in his shoes)a gun being pulled by either the deputy or the husband will face a training response to a gun coming out,it happens, the rest of the officers responding reacting to an officer down threat. There are alot of scenarios to look at,which one happened,it will come out in te wash, wait for the report,as they say on the street---SHIT HAPPENS--.All too often departments want to hang their officers before the smoke clears, how many officers or deputys have been placed in similiar situations because a wife or girfriend either over reacts or has an axe to grind.I hope everything is clarified and the smoke clears.I wish all parties the best,i wish nobody any further grief.
