A six-year Cold Spring (Minn.) Police veteran described as a "hometown boy" has been shot to death in what authorities called an ambush killing.

Officer Tom Decker was responding to a report of a suicidal man late Thursday when he was shot twice after getting out of his squad car near an apartment behind a bar in downtown Cold Spring. He died at the scene.

Ryan Michael Larson, 34, of Cold Spring, was being held Friday on suspicion of second-degree murder. The county attorney's office was considering criminal charges.

Considering charges?! What the hell is there to consider?!

chuck @ 12/3/2012 4:26 PM

You don't sound like a leo. You talk crazy bud. Stay off of here.

JJ @ 12/3/2012 5:10 PM

If he was ambushed and killed.....that is premeditated fist degree murder, not some watered down version......and what the hell is the County Attorney considering.....how to spell murder!

Dj @ 12/3/2012 6:02 PM

In the State of Minnesota, a person can not be charged with 1st degree murder until they have been indicted by a grand jury.

JJ @ 12/3/2012 6:42 PM

OK....I give, so he was CONSIDERING criminal charges! WOW, convene a grand jury to ask permission to try premeditated murder. Great liberal system.

Mike @ 12/3/2012 7:05 PM

Your watch is over my brother. May you rest in peace

My heartfelt sympathy for the family of Officer Larson and I hope his killer gets what he deserves. This sounds like a "Suicide by Cop," but the cop got killed instead. I don't want to second guess what this officer did or didn't do and I don't nearly have enough information to make any kind of assessment, but based on what is contained here, it seems the officer might have driven right up to the incident scene. I've seen a number of these LEO ambush killings where this may have been the case in the past couple of years. I have to ask myself are these officers getting too close? Are they stopping a half-block or more away from the incident address like I was taught some 35 years ago? It is disturbing the number of these ambushes that are taking place. Let's be careful out there!

Considering? WOW!! DJ thanx for clearing that up. Cause 2nd degree murder it just doesn't sound right. It should be capital murder. Anyways l guess we just gotta wait til the slow wheels of justice turn. I hope this guy gets whats coming to him. Hopefully the DEATH PENALTY is it. If MN has it. Til then R.I.P. Officer Decker. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family and your brothers and sisters in your Depatment.
