New York City Comptroller John Liu has urged Mayor Bloomberg to modify the New York Police Department's dress code to permit Sikh officers to wear their religious articles of faith in uniform.

In a letter to the mayor, Liu wrote, "Our city can enact meaningful inclusion of this community by changing N.Y.P.D. rules to allow Sikhs to serve without having to forsake their turbans and beards," reports the New York Post.

In May, the Metropolitan (D.C.) Police Department amended its rules to allow Sikh beards and turbans.

That is Bulls---, why would you want police officers to segregate their unit by who's wear a religious hood or not. A uniform is just that, one in place to give the look of all the same no matter what religion they are. Next, we will let gay people wear pink belt to let everyone know they are gay, who cares. Do your job or find another occupation. Signed Discussed.

For 26 years I have not been allowed to wear religious symbols on my police uniform so as not to alienate any other faiths during contact... No beards either, clean shaven only, and all for good reason. So why the hell should they be allowed to wear turbans?!?!? Find another freaking job if you don't understand the premise of a "uniform"!... So Mr. Mayor, politely screw off.

A,T. @ 8/14/2012 4:34 PM

This is so much politically correct horsh*t. So now the Jewish cops will want to wear their yarmulkes and the Arab cops will want o wear their keffiyehs, and the Native Indian cops will want to wear their feather bonnets and ....need I go on? I would urge them to do it just to show how stupid this is. Wearing a UNIform means looking reasonably the same, that;s the whole idea of wearing one.

Jason Barnes @ 8/14/2012 4:50 PM

What people don't understand is that this is a case of the Sikhs "woofing" (bullying) to get their way. The turban is not required by Sikhism; only requirement is ANY kind of symbolic head covering. For example, Sikh male children often wear a tiny little piece of cloth, much smaller than the Jewish yarmulke. And in India, Sikhs in professions which do not allow for turbans (outdoor physical work, flying airplanes) also routinely wear the tiny cloth. If the Sikhs want to live in the USA and do American jobs, let THEM adopt to American ways and not try to bully us into endless accommodations for them.

We don't wear crosses, cary bibles, of wear sports logos on uniforms . When you take any job, you agree to comply with the standards of the employment. Keep religion out of the job force. Want to wear a beard and turbon, find another profession.

Gerald M @ 8/14/2012 5:06 PM

Really. Let's not stop at the turbans and beards. Allow them to carry a Kirpan (the Sikh ceremonial short sword). Then they can enforce the extra large slurpee ban by cutting out the bottom of the cups. What a load.

Frank @ 8/14/2012 5:09 PM

Every corner we turn in America this country is looking less and less for what all our generations fought for. The political Cultural Diversity will be the death to the USA as we know it today. I was upset when the US Army let everyone wear a beret. So does this mean woman can where dangling earrings and I can wear shower clogs and a jock strap to work now??? People wake up!

WGhomes @ 8/14/2012 5:23 PM

I am a Police Officer, and a born New Yorker and this kind of silly stuff is the exact reason that I left New York in the first place. I say be a professional and conform to the standing order like every other person who came before you. When you retire and or find a new line of work feel free to wear whatever you want, but until then follow the sensible and very reasonable rules like everyone else. This is very silly to even consider, and will make many citizens feel uncomfortable, and our job is already tough enough in the PR section of the communities that we serve.

Capt David LACO Retired @ 8/14/2012 5:37 PM many NY LEO's will claim American Indian religious status and want to wear a war-bonnet? Or any religion, obscure or not, want to wear something, or a Christian wanting to display a cross?

hank hill @ 8/14/2012 6:30 PM

not a good idea. a uni is a uni and should be the same for everyone! if a turban showed up at my door i would not let them in, cop or not! also in todays times i think a turban would make for a very good target.

Adam @ 8/14/2012 7:52 PM

Wonder how many other letters from Comptroller are drafted up to support other cultures. +1 a uniform is a uniform along with the grooming regulations that go with it, this should be same playing field in training environ as well.

[email protected] @ 8/14/2012 8:58 PM

..but Sarge, I really am a Buddhist so can I wear my orange sari on duty???. Just wait 'til some lowlife uses that beard or long hair as a ping pong paddle, then the lawsuits against the Department will start. Ah, what the hell, dress as you please.

Eric M @ 8/15/2012 6:29 AM

As a born New Yorker and a Police officer (15 year and counting), I am shocked that they are even THINKING about this! Just like everyone else is saying, a uniform is just that, somthing to make EVERYONE UNIFORMED and the SAME! Why make a division in the ranks like this. This is not going help with moral for the troops or the public!

Bill @ 8/15/2012 10:30 AM

Lui is an idiot. I can't believe my fellow NYers voted for this guy. I hope the FBI finishes their investigation soon, and find this guy did violate election law.

AverageJoe @ 6/12/2013 10:22 AM

Wow! I am baffled by the amount of ignorance that's being thrown around in these comments. Armies and Police Departments all over the world, ranging from India to England to Canada, have carved out an exception for Sikhs who wish to serve in the military or police department by allowing them to keep their turban because they understand that the turban and the beard are an integral part of being a Sikh. Sikh men do not have an option to trim their beard or take off their turban. THEY HAVE TO WEAR THE TURBAN AND THE BEARD AT ALL TIMES. We as Americans toot our horns about democracy and religious equality and what not in the rest of the world, while back home, in arguably the most culturally diverse city in the world, we continue to discriminate against Sikhs and people of other faith. SHAME ON US!

Fred @ 8/28/2014 4:04 PM

First of ... if it is OK for a sikhs to wear a turban and have a beard .. is it ok for none sikhs to do so ? ( is that not discrimination agains none sikhs ? )
But more to the point.. IMO and office should be neutral and enforce the laws that WE THE PEOPLES agrees on, and not base on his or her personal believes ( religious or otherwise ). By wearing the turban with the uniform, the officer clearly states that he is unwilling to separate is religious belief from is duty as a officer.
By allowing obvious religious symbol on a police uniform ( in this case it seam to be specific to sikhs ) are we not saying that the state is now a religious one ??
did we not abolish state religions in the US ?? ..
I have nothing agains sikhs or any other religion and have no problem with them wearing turban ( but not when on duty ).

Rubave @ 6/8/2015 12:57 AM

Averagejoe is right we don't have any options to take off our turban or trim our beard yeah other are true we look different than others because we're different we are one of the most powerful religion in the world anyone haven't defeated us our turbans and our beards are our identity

Lacey @ 5/10/2016 10:28 AM

Historically, Sikhs were great warriors. Maybe their turnans will help keep in line.
