Fla. University Police Chief Retires Amid Hazing Scandal

April 04, 2012  |

Florida A&M University (FAMU) Police Chief Calvin Ross will retire May 1. His department has been under fire for the way it has handled an investigation of alleged systemic hazing at the institution and its music department.

Ross claims he was not forced to resign. Instead, he said he put his retirement plans on hold after the November death of the school’s drum major, Robert Champion, reports the Orlando Sentinel. He said he's moving forward with his retirement now that the case has been turned over to the state attorney.

Seven FAMU students have been charged with hazing in unrelated incidents. Additionally, two faculty members have been suspended without pay after being accused of being present during a hazing incident that occurred off campus.

Assistant Police Chief John Earst has been named interim chief.
