A bank robber wearing body armor and wielding an AK-47 fired six to eight shots at a Chino, Calif., police officer who spotted him leaving the bank, reports the Los Angeles Times.

A manhunt is now underway for the suspect, following the attempted robbery at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at California Bank and Trust.

The officer, who was hit in the leg, was able to drive himself to Chino Valley Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition Wednesday night.

KTLA has a video report that includes surveillance footage of the robbery.
