LAPD Chief Loosens Car Impound Rules for Illegals

Unlicensed drivers without prior convictions would be given the chance to avoid having their vehicles impounded under new rules outlined by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Chief Charlie Beck told the Los Angeles Times that impounding the vehicles of illegal immigrants is "a fairness issue." The hundreds of dollars in fees and fines that must be paid to retrieve an impounded car and the disruption to illegal immigrants' often tenuous hold on jobs deal a disproportionate blow to people "who are a valuable asset to our community and who have very limited resources."

The chief is also complying with state law by adopting the new policy, which allows the driver to call someone with a valid license to drive the vehicle from the scene.

In October, Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB 353 to reduce the number of cars police impound at roadway operations such as sobriety checkpoints. The law, approved by Brown on Oct. 9, prohibits police at checkpoints from seizing a car solely because the driver is unlicensed.

You got to be kidding..... Not unlicensed=illegal to operate=impound...... So if your not an illegal immigrant..... We'll just let you go since you probably don't have insurance either.... Stupidity to the Nth- degree

What part of "illegal" or"unlicensed" am I missing?

Badshot @ 12/15/2011 9:21 PM

Some states are no longer impounding vehicles of UNINSURED UNLICENSED ILLEGALS! Time for class action suits for un-equal enforcement of laws. It doesn't pay to do things the right way and obey the laws anymore. Illegals Killed 12 U.S. Citizens per day in 2006! Wonder how many now?

I tow 'em everytime, might as well make 'em pay the tow bill. I'm sure they're not gonna pay the ticket.

Discrimination in reverse under purported legal justification – where is the justice for all here? This clearly shows there is an injustice between illegal aliens and legal American citizens. An illegal can commit violations and get-a-way with it whereas if it is an American citizen their vehicle is impounded. Wake-up Americans it is time to unite and change this country back to guidelines established by our founding fathers….”It is liberty and justice for all “AMERICAN” citizens not illegals.

The legislature and Gov. Brown are trying to pass a bill that will make CA an illegal alien sanctuary. Cuts to libraries, police, fire departments, prisons (over 40,000 state prisoners are being released early) are being made. If more illegals come in, it only will make matters worse.

Welcome to Mexifornia! What a load of bull____! Good going "Chuck", why don't you just roll out the red carpet for them too?!? As a Fed who works in this area of law I am losing respect for L.A.P.D. Not the officers themselves, but their management. How much longer until L.A.P.D. gets it's orders from south of the border? Sad times. :-(

When we Talked about "founding Fathers". We have to know about History, They (Our founding fathers) came to this Country as ILLEGAL ALIENS too, They took this Country as theirs, when it was somebody's else Before,("NATIVE INDIANS") and now We come as "AMERICANS" trying to say that this country belongs to Us.
We need to wake up and read more about USA HISTORY!!!!!.
By the way this Country's Name is United States of America, and is situated in the North of a CONTINENT Called AMERICA Which is composed by South, Central and North America. So, before we make a comment in some public media like this.... PLEASE!!!! Go to School.

"They" are a valuable asset although they do not have a valid license, have no auto insurance, have limited resources, so if they are at fault and run you over or kill you , you will never collect as these valuable assets have no assets. But, they may call someone (on their $500 Ipad phone) who has a license to drive their car. Seems like a waste of manpower waiting for someone to arrive at the scene..

Absolutely ridiculous...That is all I can say........

john @ 1/4/2012 12:59 PM

@alma: Yes, and "south" america was colonized by spanish and portuguese, while "north" america was colonized mostly by british, french and other northern European cultures...sure there was the Louisiana purchase, and sure California was "liberated" from Mexico, but in the end, a border is a border. Mexico had an equal if not greater chance for prosperity that we, as a country, have had, but failed to achieve what our country has. Our country was founded on the backs of immigrants (of all races and creeds)who lived in a society that didn't have welfare programs. Many starved, were persecuted, and died, and to be perfectly honest, early Americans were racially biased against EVERYBODY. Now we have a society in which they (illegal immigrants from Mexico) want to flee their own problems to create problems for us. How is that fair?

I feel for those who are struggling with fear of death, persecution and abuse by the corruption in their country. I've known good people who were illegal immigrants, but I don't feel that they should be given a free pass in our society, and they have absolutely no right to be here. I feel for the homeless guy down the street as well, but I don't think it solves the problem for me to give him assistance when he should be solving his own problems, just like the country to our south should be solving their own problems.
