Video: Commish Kelly Downplays NYPD Cops' Dirty Dancing

VIDEO: NYPD Cops Dance Dirty at Parade

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly downplayed a video showing two of his officers bumping and grinding with scantily clad women during the West Indian Day Parade earlier this month.

The NYPD's top cop said he wished his officers hadn't participated in the revelry, but said it's not unusual for cops assigned to work the parade to get caught up in the rowdy spirit.

The officers were participating in an dance known as "daggering," which is a popular activity in the dance halls of Jamaica.

Kelly seems like a no BS, tell it like it is, "cop's cop" kinda guy... the kind that most of us would kill to work for. Personally, i like his response; doesn't necessarily want them doing it, but he doesn't seem to see a safety risk or policy violation, or any other articulable issue. Commendable response. don't bend to the public's opinion, yet don't blindly defend something.

I can't believe what I am reading. These officers acted in a very, very unprofessional manner in public. The body language they simulated was a disgrace to all LEO's and an embarrassment to the NYPD. We as LEO's must lead by example, it seems like we have be lowering our standards and accepting a behavior that is below us. If we allow behavior/conduct like this to continue where do we draw the line. In my dept. this would be grounds for termination. I find this disgraceful and conduct unbecoming of
these officers. What the hell were these guys thinking?

Charles @ 9/13/2011 4:27 PM

I agree with Lenny. I also noticed and am happy to see that they put what was going on instead of dirty dancing (Daggering). The officer was involved.. closely as we can see, with the community and that is more important than bowing to the loud minority who complain if you defend yourself and others using your training. On a serious note, I bet if someone is trying to get the drop on that officer in their neighborhood, someone is going to give the "cool officer" a heads up.

Tom @ 9/13/2011 5:55 PM

Kelly is basically saying, not real professional guys but I'm not taking any disciplinary action against you. He no doubt has a lot more to worry about than something like this. I believe that this was an appropriate response by him in New York. The officer's actions did in fact not look professional to me. In my view they should have stuck to the clapping and smiling and politely declined the dump n grind.

I guess the trooper that was just fired in the mid-west for having sex on the hood of a car should go work for NYPD!

Tom @ 9/13/2011 6:13 PM

Cont: Outside of New York, the response from the brass would likely be more in the order of WTF were you thinking officer. It would probably down hill from there.

Mark Tarte @ 9/13/2011 6:34 PM

Okay, a New Mexico State cop was just fired for having sex, in uniform, on the hood of a car caught on a surveillance camera. While this wasn't "sex" it certainly was close to it. Whatever happened to "Conduct Unbecoming an Officer"? What a very stupid act and an even more stupid response from Kelly.

deportega @ 9/14/2011 6:47 AM

OMG!! That's too funny!.. I'm sure they're reflecting back on that day and wondering "WHAT WAS I THINKING!!" The coppers just had a simple brain fart. T & A will do that to us. Chalk this up as a lesson learned. I'm sure in the guys pictured here are GREAT COPS in their regular capacity. They're probably pretty embarassed by this

Deadman @ 9/14/2011 10:34 PM

I imagine kelly was cringing when he heard this and he probably caught alot of flack from mayor boomburg (i know),but the officers were probably addressed at the precint with.(enjoy yourself/,have a nice time?,do that again and your family will have better luck talking to santa claus then you at your next duty assignment.I hope they had a great time, how many of you guys enjoyed yourselves at a Fiest, church carnival or parade,it happens.
