Maryland Trooper with Ride-Along Strikes, Kills Pedestrian

September 03, 2011  |

A Maryland state trooper responding to a burglary call struck and killed a pedestrian who stepped into the path of the oncoming patrol car on an access ramp in Queen Anne's County.

Trooper First Class Travis Nelson, 24, was responding to assist the Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office with a burglary in progress call at 9 p.m. Friday. A ride-along passenger, 24-year-old Jacolby Bruno, was riding with the trooper.

Trooper Nelson was travelling west on Route 50 and took the access ramp to Shopping Center Drive in Stevensville. His destination was in the 100 block of North Lake Drive in that city.

Iraina Curtis, 29, apparently stepped down from a Jersey wall and into the path of Trooper Nelson's cruiser, according to Maryland State Police. She was wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.
