July 31, 2011
A Winston-Salem (N.C.) Police officer died early Saturday in a crash while responding to another officer's request for backup.
Officer Russell Willingham, 28, responded to a 3:15 a.m. call from a fellow officer asking for assistance after stopping a probable drunk driver who was weaving around the road.
On the way, Officer Willingham's Ford CVPI left the roadway, went down an embankment and struck a tree.
