One Brazoria County (Texas) Sheriff's deputy was killed and a second was critically injured in a late-Sunday crash with a pickup truck that struck their cruiser head on.
The two deputies were traveling in a patrol car west on Highway 6 at FM 1128 when they crashed into a full-sized Chevy truck attempting to make a left turn into a Chevron gas station around 9:30 p.m.
The deputies had the green light and the truck failed to yield, causing a collision in which the truck flipped onto its roof. Deputy Charles Allen VanMeter, 27, was riding in the passenger side and pronounced dead at the scene. Deputy Joshua Waldrop, 26, was driving and was airlifted to a Memorial Hermann Hospital, and could be released today.
The occupants of the pickup truck were also airlifted to the hospital. Chance Chambers, 18, and Jarvis Harris, 17, remained in critical condition Monday.
