L.A.-Area Shooting Leaves Officer, 2 Others Wounded; Suspect Dead

A police officer and two others are wounded and the suspect is dead after a Sunday evening gun battle that took place when officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, officials said.

Monterey Park (Calif.) Police Department officer Gilbert Alvarez was hospitalized for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the head and several other injuries sustained while falling, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Alvarez and the bystanders are expected to make a full recovery.
