San Francisco Chief Accepts DA Post

Assistant Chief Jeff Godown takes over the department in the interim, while the San Francisco Police Commission searches for a replacement chief. The new chief will likely come from within the department, because the job is only guaranteed through the end of the year when a new mayor is elected.

Less than 18 months after he was sworn in to lead the San Francisco Police Department, George Gascon accepted a role as top prosecutor by Mayor Gavin Newsom, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

Gascon replaces outgoing District Attorney Kamela Harris, who won election in November as state Attorney General.
