Injured NY Cop Cheered As He Leaves Hospital

December 17, 2010  |

Bagpipes serenaded NYPD Officer Ricardo Ramirez as he carefully walked out of a Manhattan hospital Friday morning, about two months after he was shot in the stairwell of a Brooklyn apartment, reports Newsday.

Ramirez wore a New York Jets jersey with the number 75, a reference to the NYPD precinct where he was shot.

On Oct. 17, Elijah Foster-Bey fled from Ramirez and his partners to a third-floor stairwell of a Brooklyn apartment, where he started shooting, wounding Ramirez twice in his upper right leg and damaging the femoral artery. A third round struck Ramirez's protective vest. The officers fired back 11 times, wounding Foster-Bey in his leg.

Foster-Bey is facing charges of second-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault on a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon.

Brooklyn Judge Gustin Reichbach's decision to release Foster-Bey on $100,000 bond was called "junk justice" by New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser.
