A 79-year-old motorist blacked out shortly before crashing his Cadillac Escalade into a Polk County (Fla.) Sheriff deputy's patrol car and killing the deputy who had exited his cruiser to write a traffic citation.
Sgt. Wesley Whitmore, a 15-year-veteran, pulled over a white vehicle with an expired tag on Sunday at about 10 a.m. in a 7-Eleven parking lot in Lakeland. He was struck by the Escalade driven by Leo John Saunders that had veered out of control, reports Tampa Bay Online.
A passenger from the vehicle Whitmore stopped used the deputy's police radio to inform dispatch the officer had been struck.
