Jury Deadlocks, Philly Cop Killer Gets Life

The 12 Philadelphians who spent three days last week deliberating the fate of Rasheed Scrugs for the murder of Police Officer John Pawlowski returned to court this morning and essentially asked to start over.

The 12 Philadelphians who spent three days last week deliberating the fate of Rasheed Scrugs for the murder of Police Officer John Pawlowski returned to court this morning and essentially asked to start over.

And so Common Pleas Court Judge Renee Cardwell Hughes did just that - spending about 25 minutes reinstructing the jury about the elements of Pennsylvania's death penalty law and how to apply it to Scrugs.

When they returned from lunch to the courtroom this afternoon, they had reached their decision.

Kim Pawlowski, the officer's widow, was already in tears. The jury announced it was deadlocked. Scrugs will spend the rest of his life in prison.
