10 States Export Half of Guns Used In Out-of-State Crimes, Mayors Say

September 27, 2010  |

Half of the guns used in out-of-state crimes can be traced to 10 states, according to a new report from a coalition called Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other mayors are mounting a campaign against states they say have "lax gun laws" and are attempting to push for additional gun-control legislation in those states, the New York Times reports.

The report concludes that the 10 worst offenders per capita, led by Mississippi, West Virginia and Kentucky, supplied nearly half the 43,000 guns traced to crime scenes in other states last year.

The mayors will use the study to push for state and federal laws that would close the so-called gun-show loophole that allows attendees to purchase guns without goign through background checks.

Typical elitist leftist policy. This is the standard anti-gun claptrap from those who feel regular citizens should be unarmed. The whole thinking here is only police and criminals should have guns; regular citizens are merely victims and must remain so.

After all, if regular citizens could own firearms in their own defense, Chiefs and Commissioners would be hard pressed to justify their spending. Not to mention their positions of power and influence.

The idea that NYC's high crime rate is due to other states 'lax' firearms laws is ludicrous on the face of it. If the guns that 'cause crime' - as if an inanimate object is the root cause of crime - why don't those states with the 'lax' firearms laws have the same high crime rate as NYC?

The answer is very simple, more guns in the hands of private citizens always forces the violent crime rate down. See John Lott's book 'More Guns, Less Crime'; the information and facts are not in any doubt.

The only reason for depriving citizens of the ownership, possession and use of firearms is to keep power in the hands of the government exclusively. The result of firearms restriction is always less power and freedom for the citizenry and empowerment to the criminal element.

I fully agree with the preceding comments.

Blomberg is a known Leftist. Leftists, of course, want the USA to be conquered and totally controlled by the authoritarian government bureaucrats. They can't do this if the people are armed. We can see how this idea destroyed the Soviet Union, where only the police and violent criminals had guns. He and the other mayors need to pay attention to their own problems and forget about meddling in other states.

ARCHIE is so right. Everything that Spews out of bloombergs mouth has already been proved to be total ignorance. Every place with gun control laws have the highest violent crime rates in the nation. Here in Arizona any body can carry a gun so long as your not a convicted felon and we don't have near the murder rate's as New York's.
