Ohio Officer Ambushed in Patrol Vehicle by Rifle-Wielding Thugs, Miraculously Unhurt

September 17, 2010  |

Officers from several police departments around the Tri-State area near Cincinnati are on the lookout for four people they believe opened fire an officer early Thursday morning.

The ambush happened about 1:15 a.m. yesterday in the area of Leggett Street and Van Buren Avenue. Police at the scene told News 5 that Woodlawn Officer Tim Barrett was returning from assisting Lincoln Heights officers at an earlier shots fired call when he approached the intersection.

Police said Barrett noticed four men lying in the grass near the intersection. At that point, police said, three of the men aimed semi-automatic rifles at the officer and opened fire.

"(Barrett) slid down and floored the accelerator and radioed he was being fired on," Lincoln Heights Police Chief Ron Twitty said. "I think once they started shooting, they intended to kill him."

Officer Barrett was not seriously injured in the ambush. But authorities believe his vehicle was hit by 10 rounds of AK-47 fire and one round passed through the headrest.
