Luis Soto, the 21-year-old involved in the fight that triggered a weekend melee at a Harlem block-party barbecue, was killed by a 9mm round fired from a NYPD officer, the New York Daily News reports.

Police also recovered a .38-caliber revolver with four spent cartridges that belonged to Soto, whose fight with Angel Alvarez sparked the melee. In the chaos, four officers fired some 46 rounds.

Of those, 21 struck Alvarez, who survived because all the bullets missed his heart and major arteries. A forensic pathologist quoted in a separate New York Daily News report said it may be historic that a human has survived being struck by more than 20 bullets.

In addition to Soto and Alvarez, two officers were struck by friendly fire, including Officer Michael Tedeschi, whose body armor stopped a bullet that struck him in the chest.
