Former Miami-Dade Sergeant Faces Trial In K-9 Death

The trial of former Miami-Dade police officer Allen Cockfield begins today, as the one-time sergeant faces charges that he fatally kicked his K-9 dog in June 2006, the Miami Herald reports.
Cockfield, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges of animal cruelty and killing his 4-year-old German shepherd, Duke. Several officers told internal affairs they witnessed Cockfield kick Duke three to six times.
