A Chicago Police officer a month away from retirement was shot and killed Sunday morning, as he cleaned out his trunk, following a shift guarding the mayor's home, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Officer Michael Bailey, 62, is the third off-duty officer killed by gunfire on the city's South Side in as many months. Still in uniform at the time, Bailey was able to fire his service weapon, but it's not clear whether he hit the shooter.
Officer Thor Soderberg was shot to death during a struggle outside a police station in Englewood on July 7. Officer Thomas Wortham IV was off duty, on May 19, when three men tried to steal his motorcycle outside his parents' home and fatally shot him.
