Budget Woes May Cost Broward County SROs

Broward County, Fla., Sheriff Al Lamberti said if he isn't granted a reprieve by the County Commission this summer, his department's participation in the decades-old program that puts law enforcement officers in every Broward public school is over. He's been asked to cut about $60 million from BSO's proposed $700 million-plus 2011 budget, but so far has managed to trim only about $6 million.
And while BSO is just one of 14 agencies in the Broward districts school resource officer program, it has supplied up to a quarter of the officers in the program each year.
In 2008-2009, 54 BSO deputies worked full-time as school resource officers, on a budget of $4.4 million.
