83 Arrested In Oakland BART Verdict Protests Led By Anarchist Agitators

July 09, 2010  |

Police arrested 83 protestors mostly within a six-block radius of Oakland City Hall, following the conviction of former BART officer Johannes Mehserle of involuntary manslaughter Thursday, SF reports.

Many of the arrestees were anarchist agitators who weren't from Oakland, according to the report.

Here's an excerpt:

The rallies began peacefully but soon degenerated into lawlessness, during which protesters looted businesses, sprayed anti-police graffiti on storefronts, set trash bins on fire and clashed with police clad in gas masks, riot helmets and batons, authorities said.

Looters entered a Foot Locker shoe store, and smashed windows of a jewelry store, bank and beauty supply shop.

The shooting was a tragic accident, and the verdict, appeasement of the black community. The true injustice was the verdict. BART PD should have supplied the officer with an off-handed holster, so if anything, they should be held civilly liable, the officer, should still be a cop with counseling and more taser training. But no, the jury felt that they had to find him guilty of something to appease the fools who would be truly appeased if they could kill Mehserle themselves. Glad I'm retired, I couldn't do the job nowadays.

I understand the family of the victim wanting some type of justice, but I am personally tired of people making everything a racial thing every time its a white officer that injures a black suspect. If it was a black officer killing a white suspect, a black officer killing a black suspect, or a white officer killing a white suspect, you wouldnt even have all this crap going on. It is just another example of people finding an excuse to turn something tragic into something they can try and turn into a racial thing. People need to grow up.

I think its a tragic event on two levels. Someone loosing their life, but also the think the verdict is a tragic shame. I think the courts sold this officer out as a escape goat because they needed to appease the public.
