New BART Chief Takes Over Agency Under Intense Scrutiny

Kenton Rainey has taken over as the new BART police chief, during a period when the agency is facing intense scrutiny for the shooting of an unarmed man on New Year's Day 2009 and reevaluating its use of stun guns.

Rainey, 51, is the former Fairfield (Calif.) PD chief and developed policies to prevent racial profiling while he worked with the Ventura County (Calif.) Sheriff's Department, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Rainey, who is black, has said his goals include "increasing police visibility on trains, providing better training and improving community relations."
