Shaw responded to a shooting call at the apartment complex, and began searching for the suspect. The officers approached the man, who opened fire, killing Shaw. A fellow officer returned fire and killed the shooter.

Among the dead were 27-year-old David O'Neal Brown Jr. and 23-year-old Jeremy Jontae McMillan. Investigators are still trying to determine the sequence of events at the apartment complex, which may have as many as three crime scenes. Here's an exerpt:

At one scene, a vehicle was covered in blue tarp and an unmarked police car could be seen a short distance away. A second scene, near a complex pool, appeared focused on a red sport utility vehicle.
