Beaten Mass. Officer Says He Knew He Was in Trouble

"I knew I was in trouble when the guy punched his grandmother and aunt in front of me. It got so ugly I had to do something. I had him by the hand several times. Once they got me on the ground, they dragged me and had me against the building punching me and the open season began," Officer Eric Smith said.

A Brockton, Mass., police officer spoke out Monday for the first time about a beating that landed him in the hospital.

Officer Eric Smith said he slept for three days after last week's beating.
"I feel like I have a hangover. My body feels like it's been run over by a truck -- maybe a couple of trucks," Smith said.

Smith, 53, was beaten when he responded to a disturbance call on Pine Grove Drive on Tuesday.

"I knew I was in trouble when the guy punched his grandmother and aunt in front of me. It got so ugly I had to do something. I had him by the hand several times. Once they got me on the ground, they dragged me and had me against the building punching me and the open season began," Smith said.
