A Gilbert police lieutenant was mortally wounded when a suspect with an outstanding warrant shot him from inside a work truck he pulled over for an obscured license plate.
Christopher Redondo, 35, is suspected of shooting and killing Lt. Eric Shuhandler, 42, in a parking lot near the Gilbert-Mesa border, the East Valley Tribune reports.
Shuhandler pulled over the truck and returned to his patrol car to check the backgrounds of the suspects. When he found Redondo had the warrant, he called for non-emergency backup.
Redondo shot him once in the head when the officer returned to the passenger-side window of the truck.
Redondo and driver Daimen Irizarry then led police on a 50-mile mountainous pursuit where they threw items from the truck. After abruptly stopping, the suspects exchanged gunfire with pursuing officers from four agencies before they were wounded and apprehended.
