Eight people were killed in an Appomattox County shooting Tuesday afternoon that sparked a manhunt involving more than 150 police officers from throughout the region.
Virginia State Police said Christopher B. Speight, 39, of Appomattox, was the suspect in the killings.
Around 1:30 p.m., shots were fired at a Virginia State Police helicopter, striking it four times, including at least once in a fuel line. The helicopter was forced to land because of a fuel leak. There were no injuries.
Speight was still at large as of midnight and was believed to be in the rural area where the eight were killed. He is considered armed and dangerous.
