Port of Corpus Christi Officer Killed at Firing Range

A Port of Corpus Christi police officer died from a gunshot wound earlier this week while he and another officer were zeroing in a rifle on the agency's range.
Officer James Saavedra was shot once in the chest. He died in a local hospital.
The exact circumstances of the shooting were not known at presstime. Both officers involved were qualified range masters and firearms instructors.
The Corpus Christi Police Department has been asked to conduct an investigation.
Saavedra is survived by his wife, Rachel, two daughters, and a son.
The Port of Corpus Christi Police Department has nine officers.
