VIDEO: Suspect Kills Himself Inside Baltimore Police Station

A suspect taken into custody by Baltimore police in connection with an attempted murder was able to conceal a "high-caliber" handgun and fatally shot himself Tuesday afternoon inside the Southwestern District police station, police said, reports the Baltimore Sun.

Police said they were investigating how the man was in possession of the weapon despite being held for hours at the station in the 400 block of Font Hill Ave. The shooting occurred in a bathroom as the district's officers were in a nearby room for daily roll call.

"Our policy is clear: whenever we transport an individual to the station, it's imperative that for the officers' safety and the safety of the individual that we pat them down and make sure they have no weapons," said Deputy Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez, who heads the agency's professional standards and accountability bureau. "This individual was a dangerous individual, and anything short of a thorough search would not be acceptable."

Rodriguez repeatedly said the suspect was "dangerous" and was affiliated with a gang, though he declined to identify the gang. Rodriguez said he did not know whether officers failed to search the man. "We need to find out exactly how this occurred, and we will," he said.

Good thing no officers were injured or killed. First observation appears to suggest a shoddy search of the suspect by the arresting officers and a laxity in jail standards for not rechecking or searching all suspects that enter the facility. Of course, something strange could have occurred ... I wonder.

Rodriguez said, "We need to find out exactly how this occurred, and we will." I would consider it to be a miracle ascribed to the Guardian Angel of LEO's--St. Michael. The weapon was miraculously unnoticed upon proper searches--do to the intercession of St. Michael. The weapon was intended to kill ONLY the Perp, as per further intercession of St. Michael. And Deputy Commissioner Rodriguez get to the nearest Catholic Church and light a candle to honor St. Michael. Other Catholics should do the same for this action that saved the taxpayer huge sums of money adjudicating this case. God works in mysterious ways.

Us jails are starting to sound like Apartheid era South Africa.

Lenny, As usual, you are a moron! But the scary thing is that, recently, some of your harangues have made a bit of sense.

SGT JJ @ 8/6/2014 4:19 PM

There is no mystery as to what happened. Either the prisoner was not properly searched in the field, nor as usually required for station jailers, OR, a weapon was stashed in the bathroom/left behind by an officer taking a shit there, all of which give only one reason for this....POOR PRACTICES AND NEGLIGENT OFFICERS at all levels handling.

The officers involved in this pat down should thank their lucky star that one of their own didn't get shot. I hope they learned from this experience to check the arrestee's more thorough for weapons and contraband.

@ Lenny, from day one you never made any sense because you are a moron.

Thank you web guru

Phew, very scary and somebody needs a few weeks "vacation" without pay. Like the video where the guy was arrested, drinks from a bottle of water, pulls out a full-sized 1911 and shoots himself in the head...amazing he didn't take others with him.

David @ 8/11/2014 9:52 AM

Sorry to offend you all but most officers do a bad job of searching. Once an officer has someone "in custody" most others assume (and we know what that word means) that all is OK and the suspect was searched. After that everyone in contact with them does not want someone to think they do not trust them or that they might not do a good search job so they are never searched again. It takes a shooting, stabbing, cutting or Over dose (missed drugs) to get their attention.
