Sureño Gang Member Gets Life for Killing L.A. County Deputy

A Sureño gang member pleaded guilty Tuesday to murdering a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy in the driveway of his Cypress Park home in 2008, and received life without the possibility of parole.

Carlos Velasquez, 28, also pleaded guilty to one count of a felon in possession of a firearm for the Aug. 2, 2008 slaying of Dep. Juan Abel Escalante.

Velasquez, a member of the Avenues gang, admitted to killing Deputy Escalante as the deputy left his parent's home near Echo Park for a shift in the Men's Central Jail. The deputy guarded the jail's highest-risk members, including Mexican Mafia associates.

Three other alleged members of the Avenues gang—Jose Renteria, Armando Albarran, and Roberto Salazar—have also been charged in the killing. Their trials are pending, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The Avenues is a Sureño gang that operates primarily in northeast Los Angeles County. They have a close connection with the Mexican Mafia and several of their members are also members of the Eme, said Richard Valdemar, POLICE Magazine's gang expert and a retired gang investigator.

"In today's age, it's difficult to be anonymous in the neighborhood because gang members are part of everyone's neighborhood," Valdemar said. "So if you're a policeman, they're going to find out. Anonymity is very difficult to keep up in today's world."

Too bad this punk did not get the death penalty prior to being arrested. He should have went for his gun during the arrest and did the public and Deputy Escalante a favor. Rest in Peace Deputy Escalante, may your family survive through their grief.

These scumbags are out of control. Gangbangers should be put to death for this type of crime, there is no rehabilitation for them. They don't care about being in jail for life, so killing a LEO is not a big deal to them. When is the Justice system going to wake up as well as the general public. The public needs to start raising some hell about this type of violence? If these animals will kill a LEO what do people think they will do to them if they get in their sights. This problem has been getting out of control for years and it needs to be dealt with diffrently because our current enforcement is not working. All my prayers and thoughts to the Deputy Escalante and his family.

In addition to what Joe and Michael said, this POS will be regarded as a hero by the other human flotsam our tax dollars are supporting in prisons. Even if sentenced to death they sit on death row filing appeals for decades. How long has it been since CA executed anyone no matter how horrendous their crimes.?

Bob @ VA @ 10/24/2012 5:10 AM

CA libs doesn't believe in evil. They think that murderers had a bad childhood and can be re-educated because he's basically a good boy who caught a string of bad luck. Bull. Gang members who commit violent crimes should be executed. They are evil and there's no rehabilitation for evil. Statistically speaking, there's a zero recidivism rate for executed murderers.

This scumbag should be put to death tonight along with everyother gangbanging slimeball in this country. Time to deport all illegals from mexico back to the hellhole they came from. We will not be intimidated by this punk. The message to all gangs should be that old sparky is getting ready to be fired up again. They should be cooked and fed to the other prisoners to save money on food costs.

Capt David-Ret LA County @ 10/24/2012 7:59 AM

Will have to research this more. Were they targeting this deputy or was he an unfortunate victim to a random criminal action?

John @ 10/27/2012 3:33 PM

Most likely he was targeted for a hit by a MM gang member in the jail.

OCSO @ 10/31/2012 6:42 AM

The death penalty in California is non existent. You have a better chance of dying of old age on death row the in the death chamber. They have a bill on the November ballot to commute all death penalty sentences to life. I say if they do that, then all death row inmates get put in to general population, no solitary, no special wing, nothing. It won't be long before the commuted death penalty is carried out from within.
