ATF Head Names FBI, DEA In Gun-Trafficking Probe

July 06, 2011  |

Facing increasing pressure to resign, the interim head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) instead added more fuel to a congressional gun-trafficking probe by implicating the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration on Wednesday.

Kenneth Melson told congressional investigators that several Mexican drug cartel operators targeted by his agency were paid informants for the FBI and DEA.

Melson said the FBI and DEA kept the ATF "in the dark" about their relationships with the cartel informants.

Under the ATF-led Fast and Furious gun-trafficking operation, the ATF lost track of the guns, which have been found at crime scenes in Mexico, a rural area  near Nogales, Ariz., where a U.S. Border Patrol agent was killed, and at crime scenes in Phoenix.

It another sad day for the Federal Government LEO's. Crap like this makes you guys look bad. Mayors like Boston's Menino blames the gun problems on the average citizen and chokes us to death with hundreds of firearms laws. New laws are being submitted by the Massachusetts Legislatures monthly. This is just another nail in the coffin for law-abiding competive shooters. Thanks ATF, DEA and FBI management for pulling another bone head move. What's was your qualification for holding these position anyway? Time to clean house and hold these people responsible. One set of Firearms laws for all 50 states would be better than what New York, California and Massachusetts citizens are required to live with. Just think how much money these States have loss in Sales Tax and Licensings revenues.

Having been the Director of Internal Affairs for the Metropolitian Police Department in Washington, D.C., I know first hand that this investigation will find many open and closed doors. But, whoever has this responsibility should remember two things: first to ask and seek the truth no matter where it leads and don't assume anything until you verify everything... There is more, but these two will keep you focused and headed in the right direction.

NWO SUCKS!!!!!! Elect Ron Paul 2012

Ronald C Nichols Jr. @ 7/8/2011 11:15 AM

Sounds like, The head of the ATF is going to be nobody's fall guy and I
hope he continues to expose Holder and his menions as the out of control gang in the justice dept, Holder has to go, his obstruction of justice in many things is just one of the reasons and now this mess, you see folks when you employ people like this, this is what you get, a bunch
individuals who think they are above the law and that is totally wrong
regardless on your political affliations, we are a nation of laws with checks and balances and anytime anyone distorts that premis they are messing with the very foundation of our way of doing things here in

The bottom line is sometimes mistakes happen. As terrible as it is. When they do answer for it and deal with it. Don't blame your teammates in another agency. That's crazy. LEADERSHIP IS A DIFFICULT, LONELY AND AN UNTHANKFUL CALLING. Everyone in Law Enforcement thinks that they are good for it. Guess what?.... they're not. That includes the second guessers that have never had the responsibility before. When things go wrong, like in this example, a leader doesn't step down, they step up to meet the challenge. I actually hope Melson keeps his job but takes a different route of attacking the problem.

Fed Cop @ 7/8/2011 12:15 PM

FBI? DEA? In this administration we all know who to blame! "It's Bush's fault" or "Ya see, when the republicans cut taxes for the rich, Mexican cartels get guns from US gun dealers like Walmart"

Tom Ret LPD @ 7/8/2011 7:57 PM

Troy, you are right in that people make mistakes. This one in particular was a humdinger that resulted in fellow officers getting killed as a result of this ill conceived project. I suspect Holder is involved in this mess and will try to block any investigation that might reveal his involvement. This does not bode well for this government which is suppose to be so above board and open. Holder seems to make a habit of making goof ball decisions. I don't fault the rank and file of ATF. They don't make policy.

Remember Politics get people hurt or killed my personal view. I am sure we have all seen this before a good read this book and goes beyond just corporate type items but to teaming. Quoted: “Silos, the invisible barriers that separate work teams, departments and divisions, causing people who are supposed to be on the same team to work against one another. According to Pat, silos—and the turf wars they enable—devastate organizations by wasting resources, killing productivity and jeopardizing results. Urging leaders to provide a compelling context for their employees to work together, Pat's model gives leaders a simple tool for enabling clarity, unity and alignment in their organizations.

frank @ 7/10/2011 4:06 AM

i hope that we are not going back to the days where one agency thinks they are better than another, they all are to share information and arrest the bad guys, thats why a lot of agencys where placed under one roof so to speak via homeland security.

grumpyass @ 7/10/2011 1:53 PM

W#hat do expect from a bunch of liberals who are more worried what their other liberals will think about them. We have lost what we are supposed to be enforcing, the laws that are already on the books. Our police administrators need to stop worrying what is going to happen to them if they enforce that laws. If you do what is correct, follow the laws, and most IMPORTENTLY document all what you have done, you will survive. I know, I am a retired Deputy Chief with 36 years of service. L/E needs to stay focused and when its time to vote use your head.

Greg @ 7/11/2011 3:35 AM

"Feds need to STAND DOWN and give Tactical Control back to states in regards to policing issues and Law Enforcement ...ATF needs to be disbanded asap . Why does Dept of Education needs shotguns ? "

Because they're doing assaults on people who owe student loans. One family was recently attacked by Dept. of Educations version of a SWAT team...guys ex-wife owed on a loan and was not even at that address anymore.

Fish rots from the head down...The bama and Eric Holder are doing their best to ruin law enforcement. I still believe they pulled this "mistaken" scam as a way of justifying the UN Small Arms Treaty due to civilian sales of guns to the narco-terrorists.

dan @ 7/12/2011 8:02 AM

More shovel ready stimulus-money jobs...and wait,there's more:
Operation Castaway out of Tampa Office. Are we to believe that cartels with unlimited money prefer semi-auto rifles to full auto assault rifles....LMAO. This is all about gun control and abridging the 2nd Amendment. RICO in action by current administrqtion.
