The roar of hundreds of motorcycle engines will resound through North San Diego County on Saturday, May 12th, as off-duty cops and their friends and supporters ride in memory of Officer Dan Bessant of the Oceanside (Calif.) Police Department, who was shot and killed last December.

Bessant was gunned down from behind by a gang member while he was standing outside his patrol car covering another officer on December 20, 2006. Bessant is survived by his wife Katelyn and infant son Wyatt. “There will be a barbecue lunch, door prizes, and a raffle of donated items to raise funds for Officer Bessant’s infant son,” said Officer Damien Jackson of the Escondido Police Department, the event’s organizer.

The Fourth Officer Down Memorial Motorcycle Rally was planned to coincide with this year’s National Police Week. All those wishing to support law enforcement and remember those who have fallen in the line of duty are welcome.

“You don’t need a motorcycle,” says Jackson. “Come drive the rally in your car!”
