A motorist in New Brunswick, N.J., who was cited by an officer for having an unregistered vehicle, got his car registered online before the ticket was written.

Sean Leach, 36, used his cell phone to call a friend when Officer Jason Zier pulled him over. Leach’s friend logged onto a computer and used the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s online registration service. Leach gave his friend his credit card information and paid the necessary fee instantaneously.

When Zier handed Leach the completed ticket, Leach told him he was already registered. The computer in Zier’s patrol car confirmed it.

He still got the ticket. But he avoided having his car towed and paying for the towing bill.
