Colorado Officer Fired for Racial Slur to be Re-Hired

An Aurora (CO) police officer who was fired after being seen on video using a racial slur will reportedly be rehired, according to The Hill.

In body camera footage, Lieutenant Charles DeShazer can be heard saying, "We got the Alabama porch monkeys all contained."

Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz said in a Facebook post on Tuesday that DeShazer "made a highly inappropriate and racially inflammatory comment while on the scene of a Denver Police Department officer involved shooting following a police pursuit. The offensive statement was caught on the body worn camera of another officer, and was reported internally by two APD supervisors who were also at the scene and heard the comment."

Chief Metz said that following an internal affairs investigation DeShazer was let go from the department.

DeShazer then appealed his termination to the Civil Service Commission, and following a hearing, the Commission reduced the termination to a demotion from lieutenant to sergeant.

"The Department is in the process of returning Sgt. DeShazer back to work. He will first be assigned to the APD Academy to ensure he is in compliance with all POST certification requirements," Chief Metz wrote. "His final assignment has yet to be determined. It is within my authority to set his assignment. I can assure the community that Sgt. DeShazer will not be in a supervisory or citizen-facing role."

Another of america's finest, has a cop ever lost when they appeal to some sort of civil service commission? This person is a disgrace I hope his chief lets him clean toilets and nothing more.

Karl, with all due respect, you don't have a clue as to how often cops are fired and disciplined. You are obviously NOT in Law Enforcement and are ignorant (no offense) of the facts around police discipline. You only see what the press allows you to see. I have sat on police disciplinary boards for 20 of my 32+ years in law enforcement and I know for a fact what goes on. I have personally disciplined and even had a hand in firing officers for offenses. I also have seen unwarranted, unproven and false complaints against officers and seen what they go through,I would say at a greater rate then most professions. LEOs face more scrutiny then any other profession I know off. People refer to the "blue wall but who oversees and disciplines Judges, Lawyers and Doctors as an example? THEY police them selves. Look into how many of them are ever disciplined and compare that to cops. I think once you are armed with facts and not just opinion perhaps you will no longer be ignorant of the subject,.

So, the formerly unknown to me term "Alabama porch monkeys" can't apply to anyone who's always sitting on their porch rubbernecking the neighborhood goings-on? Why not? Either I'm naive, or I missed that English language rule.
