Pittsburgh Mayor Calls for 'Outside' Chief

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said Thursday he wants to hire a new police chief "with no relationships, with no ties, with really no history" related to the embattled department.

"Given the issues surrounding the bureau it would be my preference to identify somebody from the outside with a clean slate," Ravenstahl said a day after seeking and receiving Chief Nate Harper's resignation amid a federal investigation. He said he spoke to more than one candidate, but identified none.

Ravenstahl said he chose and supports acting Chief Regina McDonald despite criticism that she oversaw the special events office that FBI agents visited last week as part of an investigation into discretionary spending from two accounts at the Greater Pittsburgh Police Federal Credit Union.
